Ukeru Crisis Management System
PlayWorks Therapy, Inc. has adopted the Ukeru method to support our clients' autonomy and diminish the need for restraint-based interventions. The training for this program consists of both conceptual and physical components:
Conceptual Training:
- Focuses on building therapeutic relationships that prioritize comfort, rather than control.
- Enhances understanding of the neuroscience behind relationship-building and safety.
- Improves neurobehavioral observation skills to better respond to behaviors.
- Promotes a trauma-informed approach to care, emphasizing the lived experiences of individuals with developmental, regulatory, and mental health needs.
- Teaches de-escalation strategies to transform aggressive behaviors into positive outcomes.
Physical Training:
- Teaches how to use soft pads to protect children from self-injury and harm to others.
- Covers techniques for handling behaviors such as hitting, biting, kicking, pulling hair, and other actions that may pose harm.
- Focuses on safety for children who attempt to elope.
Ukeru is already used by over 400 organizations across the U.S., helping individuals with a variety of disabilities. Clients are encouraged to interact with the Ukeru pads into play and as comfort items within sessions to familiarize themselves with their role in ensuring safety as part of our ongoing commitment to support every child's independence and self-determination.
